The Chains of Democrocy

chainsDemocracy is considered one of the primary elements of what constitutes “Freedom”. The Idea is that the majorities will is either directly executed or the direction, stance and character of the representatives are a manifestation of it. However, authority implies some or total suppression of the will of the individual, the exact opposite of freedom. Anarchy is the “political” form of freedom, but within anarchy the individuals are subject to the brutalities of the chance circumstance, doubly so with birth. Without designated authorities, everyone is an authority. And without any standard of law the one with the biggest gun and the most friends is king. Functioning anarchy is impossible with beings possessing minds, for it would divulge into a complex multimonarchy.

The antithesis of democracy is dictatorship. Within a dictatorship the vast majority of a population have no vote on who or what is the authority. But even the dictator isn’t completely free. His existence is dependent on the majorities contentment, for the dictators prosperity is directly related to the masses’ state. Human rights aren’t necessarily any better protected under a democracy compared to a dictatorship, only the threat of violation typically will never occur to more than forty nine percent of the population. A bill of rights to protect the individual is also not a guarantee because anything that’s written by the people can be erased by the people.

Knowing whom to vote for to promote peace, equality and justice is not that difficult if a person has exorcized their critical thinking skills and values the self and society. Having a person of such character to run for office and being able to see through the sea of lies, generally seems to be more of a challenge. Government is the amplified voice and hand of society and that’s why democracy is considered the cornerstone of freedom. It gives everyone a measurable part in the process. But casting the vote, however measurable in the physical sense, is the smallest part.

In many relationships members declare that some subjects are off limits, namely religion and politics. These subjects lend themselves to heated arguments and put stress on the relationship. I’ve yet to see two religious people debate what should be a priority to them. But what a silly event it would be, to see unfounded nonsense do battle. Politics are a different story because they do have actual facts, logic and principles that form legitimate arguments that are either right or wrong. Paradoxily, the closer one is to understanding the means to personal freedom and collective peace the more one is personally chained to opening the minds of their friends and family. Which is something that has the possibility of being nearly impossible but is the primary source of democracies strength. Dictatorship’s chains are much less desirable, however, under such a system at least one is not responsible to potentially be pitted against their close friends and family. Democracy has some twisted links.
